This page explains the nature, scope, and limitations of the services offered through John Doig Soul Accompaniment.
Nature of the work
Services are provided as soul accompaniment, also known as spiritual direction or spiritual accompaniment.
This is a reflective, contemplative, and non-directive practice concerned with spiritual life, meaning, and lived experience. Sessions may include conversation, silence, contemplative attention, embodied awareness, prayer, ritual, creative reflection, dreams, and imagination.
The work is collaborative and voluntary. You remain the authority in relation to your own experience, beliefs, interpretations, and decisions.
Professional scope and limitations
Soul accompaniment is not psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry, counselling, medical treatment, or mental health care. It does not provide diagnosis, clinical assessment, treatment, case management, or crisis intervention.
No medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice is provided. Nothing shared in a session, on this website, or in associated materials should be understood as advice in these areas.
This work may take place alongside healthcare, psychological support, or other professional services, but it does not replace them. If you are receiving medical, psychological, or other professional care, you are encouraged to continue that care and consider with the relevant professional whether reflective spiritual accompaniment is suitable for you.
Where a person's needs appear to fall outside the scope of this practice, another form of support may be recommended.
Dreams and imagination
Sessions may include optional engagement with dreams, images, memory, imagination, embodied awareness, ritual, or creative reflection.
These approaches are not used to:
- diagnose a condition;
- establish or verify historical facts;
- recover or authenticate memories;
- predict future events;
- provide divination or fortune-telling;
- determine another person's intentions; or
- impose an authoritative interpretation.
Dreams and images may carry personal or spiritual significance. Any meaning remains open to exploration within your own experience and discernment.
Participation in dreamwork or imaginal practices is optional. You may decline, pause, or redirect any practice without needing to provide a reason.
Participation and consent
Participation is voluntary. You may pause, redirect, or end a session or the working relationship at any time.
Consent is ongoing and may be withdrawn in relation to any particular practice while continuing with other aspects of soul accompaniment.
Insights, reflections, and decisions arising from sessions remain your own. This does not remove my responsibility to practise within appropriate professional, ethical, and safeguarding boundaries.
Services are offered to adults aged 18 years and over.
Confidentiality and safeguarding
Information shared in sessions is treated respectfully and confidentially, subject to the limitations described in the Ethics, Scope and Boundaries and Privacy Policy pages.
Confidentiality may be limited where:
- there is a serious and imminent risk of harm to you or another person;
- disclosure is required or authorised by law;
- there are concerns relating to abuse, neglect, or the safety of a child or adult at risk;
- records are subpoenaed or otherwise lawfully requested; or
- limited information is reasonably required for professional supervision, legal advice, or insurance purposes.
Where disclosure is considered necessary, information will be limited to what is reasonably required in the circumstances.
Soul accompaniment is not an emergency, investigative, or statutory safeguarding service. Concerns may nevertheless require consultation with, referral to, or notification of an appropriate safeguarding, emergency, or legal authority.
Online sessions
Sessions are conducted online using Zoom.
Reasonable steps are taken to support privacy, security, and continuity. However, no online platform or form of electronic communication can be guaranteed completely private, secure, uninterrupted, or error-free.
Sessions are not recorded. Participants are also asked not to record a session without prior discussion and agreement.
You are responsible for choosing a setting that provides reasonable privacy and physical safety. Sessions should not be attended while driving, operating machinery, intoxicated, or otherwise unable to participate safely.
If a connection fails, an attempt will be made to reconnect through Zoom or the telephone number provided. Where a disconnection occurs while there is a serious and imminent concern for your safety and you cannot be reached, your nominated emergency contact or an appropriate emergency service may be contacted.
International clients and insurance
This practice is based in Tasmania, Australia, and operates within Australian professional and ethical frameworks.
Professional indemnity insurance is maintained and includes international coverage, subject to the terms, conditions, and geographical limits of the policy.
The current policy does not extend to work with clients located in the United States or Canada. An insurance exclusion does not necessarily mean that spiritual accompaniment cannot lawfully be offered in those locations. It does, however, mean that the work would fall outside my professional indemnity cover.
Enquiries from clients located in the United States or Canada are considered individually before an appointment is accepted. Consideration may include the nature of the proposed work, the client's location, relevant jurisdictional requirements, and whether the engagement can be undertaken responsibly.
Submitting an enquiry or requesting an appointment does not itself confirm that an ongoing engagement has been accepted.
Clients are asked to provide accurate information about the country and region from which they attend and to advise me if their location changes.
No guarantee of outcomes
No particular outcome, result, insight, spiritual experience, or personal change can be promised or guaranteed.
Soul accompaniment provides a space for attention and exploration. What emerges, and how it is understood or acted upon, will differ for each person.
Crisis, safety and support
This practice does not provide crisis, emergency, or acute mental health support.
If you or another person are in immediate danger, contact the emergency service where you are located. In Australia, call Triple Zero (000).
